Building a support base
USS Colorado arrived at HMAS Stirling for a submarine maintenance period, Australia’s Defence Department announced October 27. Australian personnel are working with U.S. and British partners as the country develops the workforce and facilities needed to support visiting nuclear-powered submarines.
The announced work includes Australian-designed access scaffolding, use of upgraded pier facilities and maintenance aboard the Virginia-class submarine. Safety exercises are also planned. These are elements of the current maintenance program, rather than a declaration that Australia can independently perform every category of submarine repair.
A separate milestone ahead
A joint statement dated October 27 identifies Colorado as the first U.S. submarine assigned to Submarine Rotational Force-West beginning in late 2027. That future rotation is distinct from the present visit.
Our assessment is that sustainment is the central story: a visiting vessel needs qualified people, reliable equipment and agreed procedures ashore. The maintenance period provides practical experience before regular rotations begin, while the announced timetable remains a plan rather than a completed deployment.
