A supervised experiment

Four unmanned ground vehicles demonstrated coordinated movement, sensing and payload operations at Fort Knox on October 15, according to an Army account published October 22. The experiment drew on DARPA’s RACER autonomous-mobility work and used simulated threats at St. Vith Range.

The vehicles could navigate and identify possible targets, but a person retained authority to approve an engagement. The Army’s account describes a vehicle stopping after detecting a potential target and waiting for direction before the demonstration continued.

What the milestone means

The distinction matters: automating a vehicle’s route does not automatically delegate a commander’s decision to use force. The demonstration brought those separate functions together in a controlled setting.

Our assessment is that the next useful questions concern reliability, communications and the information an operator receives before making a decision. A successful range event is evidence of a tested combination, rather than proof of performance under every operational condition. The report does not establish general fielding or a replacement for soldiers.
