The evidence behind a safety decision

Public Health Command Europe’s Laboratory Sciences Division renewed its accreditation, the Army reported October 28. The Landstuhl-based laboratory analyzes biological and chemical samples that support food, water and environmental health decisions across several military regions.

The report says outside auditors examined quality records, equipment and testing procedures, and observed laboratory work. A week of on-site assessment followed an earlier virtual document review; exact calendar dates were not provided.

What accreditation establishes

The laboratory’s ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation concerns the competence and consistency of testing operations. Its findings help public health professionals and commanders assess conditions affecting military personnel and families.

Our assessment is that repeatable testing gives decision-makers a stronger basis for action than an unsupported assumption about conditions. Accreditation evaluates the laboratory’s processes and capabilities; it is not a blanket finding that every water source, food item or workplace is free of risk. Particular samples and local conditions still require their own assessment.
