The work inside the operations center
Navy Region Hawaii described the contribution of 23 Reserve sailors to its Regional Operations Center in a report published October 21. Led by Cmdr. Jason Afong, the team supports awareness, coordination and installation recovery when emergencies place demands on the region.
The account looks back to April’s Hurricane Exercise 2026, which helped personnel understand how functions such as facilities, port operations and public affairs fit together. It presents that exercise as preparation, not as a storm occurring this week.
Readiness includes information
The regional center operates continuously, and reserve personnel add capacity during changing conditions. Coordinating a response involves identifying needs, sharing a common picture and helping decision-makers connect departments that normally perform different jobs.
Our assessment is that this account illustrates the value of reserve expertise beyond visible equipment movements. It does not provide a new activation order or a live assessment of conditions at any installation. Readers should use current installation notices and civilian emergency authorities for immediate weather and safety instructions.
