A year of awards
VA said October 27 that it awarded $106.5 million to 21 cemeteries during fiscal year 2026, describing the amount as the program’s highest annual total since it began in 1980.
The grants support several kinds of work, including establishing burial grounds, expanding existing sites and paying for improvements or maintenance. The announcement includes projects in states, territories and tribal communities.
Funding and access are different measures
These are fiscal-year awards being reported today. They are not a statement that every funded construction project is complete or immediately accepting burials.
For families, the useful questions remain local: which cemetery serves the area, what eligibility rules apply and how arrangements are made. Our assessment: the awards show the role of state and tribal partnerships in extending memorial services, while individual burial arrangements should be confirmed directly with the cemetery or VA.
